About Blulu

Blulu is a by-the-pack brand for the parts of a house that get used up: the decorations, the fixings, the storage and the small kit that goes with them.

The range runs to 1198 lines across 15 shelves, from a pair of clips to a 5000-piece box of nails. Party and celebration is the largest of them at 239 lines, wall fixings the next at 219, and after those come the seasonal boxes, the storage bins, everyday clothing basics and the craft table. It is a household range rather than a trade one, and it is broad because a house is: picture hooks and paper napkins turn up on the same shopping list more often than either turns up alone.

One habit holds it together. State the count, state the size, state the material, and stay quiet about anything the product does not state. 985 of these lines give a pack count and 19 colours are named across the range. Where a figure is missing the row is left out rather than averaged into place.

The second habit is division. A bigger box is not always the better value, so the price on every page is followed by what one piece of it costs, rounded up to the cent so the smaller number is never the flattering one.

And the limits, in the same breath. Blulu is not a till: ordering, payment, delivery and returns all happen at checkout with the retail partner, and anything to do with a parcel belongs to them. What belongs here is the range, the counts and the descriptions.

How the range is built

Nothing here was chosen to complete a set. A line earns its place by being reordered, in the count it is reordered in, and it leaves the shelf when that stops happening. It is why the range looks uneven written down: forty shades of one thing on one shelf, and a single size of another.

The dull half of a good day

A birthday is remembered for the cake. It runs on forty paper plates, a bag of balloons, tape that holds to a painted wall and something to weigh the tablecloth down outdoors. Blulu is the second list, the one written at eight in the evening after the first one is finished.

So the range is broad rather than deep, and it is broad in a particular direction: Party & Celebration and Wall & Fixings are the two biggest shelves here, and between them they are most of what a house puts up, lays out and takes down again.

How many, before anything else

The count is the first thing on a Blulu card, before the colour and before the price. For this range it is also the only fact that settles anything: napkins are bought by the fifty and anchors by the hundred, and a page that leads with a shade of pink has answered the wrong question.

Two hundred balloons at eleven dollars and thirty at four are not comparable until somebody divides, so the division is printed next to the price rather than left to the buyer at the checkout.

Nothing rounded, nothing invented

A row appears on a Blulu page when the product itself gives the figure. 985 of 1198 lines state a pack count and 19 colours are named across the range. Where a size or a material is not stated, the row is missing rather than filled in with something plausible.

That leaves gaps, and the gaps are the point. A stated measurement can be trusted precisely because the unstated ones were not guessed at.

Fifteen shelves, sorted by the job

The same object is filed in half a dozen different places depending on who is doing the filing, which is a good way to lose somebody halfway through a list. Here a Halloween favour is on the seasonal shelf in October rather than under tableware, a mirror clip is with wall fixings rather than with mirrors, and a toe sleeve is with foot care rather than with socks.

The test is what somebody is shopping for, not what the thing technically is. Where a line honestly belongs nowhere, it sits in Pets & More rather than being wedged onto a shelf to look tidy.

An empty peg beats a stale number

Prices here carry a date, stated once on the sources page instead of stamped across every screen. When a line stops being orderable its page comes down until it is back, so nothing on this site quotes a figure at you that nobody will honour.

It means the shelf is occasionally short. That is the trade, and it is the right way round.

How a pack is put together

We organise our work around the batch. A batch is one colour and one count. Before a batch is closed the total is weighed and then spot-counted by hand. That is where the number printed on the pack comes from, and it is the number this site publishes.

Colour is matched against a kept reference sample, never against the run before it. Matching each run to the last one is how a colour drifts a shade a season until the pack you reorder is not the pack you had.

A sample is pulled and laid out from every batch before it closes: the edges, the print alignment, the way a clip springs back. Whoever checks the batch writes the measurements down, and those written measurements are the dimensions you read here.

The bench

The bench is where a pack stops being an idea. It is a long table, a good lamp and a heavy wooden drawer, and the drawer is the quiet centre of the room: it holds the reference samples every colour is judged against.

We think in packs rather than in pieces. One clip tells you very little; two hundred of them tell you whether the moulding is even, whether the colour holds from the first to the last, and whether the count on the label was arrived at honestly.

It is unhurried work and it is deliberately dull. Nobody at the bench is asked to have an opinion about a pack. They are asked to measure it, write down what they measured, and say when something is not right.

Prices

When a line stops being orderable it comes off the shelf here until it is back, because a pack count beside a price nobody will honour is worse than an empty peg. The date of the last update is on our sources and practice page.
